I bought an iMac back in 1998. Because it was cool. Connect just two cables and you're in the Internet. Yeah, right. It of course didn't work out like that.
Fast forward to 2004 | |

Today, as I mentioned, I took it back. It isn't working still, doesn't want to power up at all and just takes up valueable space from Andreas' father. This of course, wasn't the reason for me taking it back. It was all about a thread on the Informatik Forum (warning: german language), which made me think about my iMac again. And I wanted to try out the all hyped Mac OS X. It wouldn't be too fast, the iMac wasn't fast back in 1998 and sure isn't of today. But it should be useable at least to a certain amount, because the iMac is said to be MacOS-X compilant. So I decided to take it back and try my best to make it running again. |
I took the iMac with me to GHL, where Flo and I updated the web server today. We replaced an outgrown, old harddisk with a new 80 GB model, making two dedicated partitions for /tmp
and /var
as well.
Flo helped me with disassembling the iMac and also read through the repair manual. As a technican, he's used reading such descriptions and helped me out a couple of times already.
It's quite interesting to see, how the iMac is built. My iMac doesn't differ too much from a common PC. One difference is: The parts don't only look cheap, they feel very cheap as well. And fragile. Consequently, the cover on the side of my iMac got lost somewhere already.
