Insanely Dead: My iMac is back

I bought an iMac back in 1998. Because it was cool. Connect just two cables and you're in the Internet. Yeah, right. It of course didn't work out like that.

Power up problems

My iMac wasn't too much of use to me anymore, I used it less every day. Still I had to buy stuff for it, Norton Utilities for example, because the filesystem had some problems. I even was able to get back a bit of performance with SpeedDisk. But I wasn't too enthusiastic about my iMac anymore.

After a while, it happend more and more often, that my iMac would lock up completely. Sometimes, it didn't want to start up at all. All I got was that dreaded orange Power led. The only solution: Disconnecting from the outlet, reconnecting, pressing the Power Button. Repeat until working.

Things got worse, my guarantee (a whole 6 months) was over already. My iMac started crashing quite often, it wasn't too stable in the first place. The Power Button thing happend more and more often, still I was able to get it working. I tried a lot of things, be it clearing the PRAM, reconstructing the desktop, whatever I came across in the Internet.

It was no use. I gave up and locked my iMac away. I started hating it, though I somehow wanted to get it working anyway. It has a certain amount of personality which I could not resist.

Giveaway

Some years later I had the opportunity to give my iMac away to some friends of mine. Andreas and Csilla, so I thought, would put it in good use. Besides, Andreas' father was a tv-technican, so he might be able to repair it. And, as Csilla is graphically very talented, she'd be the ideal user of my iMac. So I lend them my iMac for an uncertain amount of time.

    It's a pity you've had a bad experience with your iMac but mostly it just comes from lack of knowledge and some bad advice from your retailer although I don't know about the power-up problems.

    The RAM is dirt cheap as it's standard SODIMM or DIMM depending on the slot. It can be expanded to 192MB RAM which is barely passable for OSX and some people have had 384MB running ok. The video ram can be expanded to 6MB which will get you millions of colours at 1024x768.

    The empty port you mention is probably the mezzanine slot, not airport if you've a RevA iMac. There were only a few expansion cards for it as Apple killed the slot in the RevC iMac. IIRC there was a Voodoo2 card and a SCSI card.
